Frequently Asked Questions

After being the unofficial collective source for LAUSD school information for the last few years, we have decided the best use of our time was to create an FAQ for two reasons: to allow parents to find the answers to their most burning questions themselves and to allow us to avoid carpal tunnel by repeatedly typing out the same answers. Look here for your answers first, then email us if your question is not answered here.

A: No. Children with the highest initial number of magnet points are those whose home LAUSD schools are overcrowded (4 points), PHBAO--Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian or Other (4 points), or both (4 + 4 = 8 points). Once a child is in a magnet school, his/her sibling gains an extra 3 points. There are some Gifted magnets, but not for kindergarten. And if your kid is so very Gifted, Einstein, you’re no doubt Gifted enough yourself to continue further research through the LAUSD.net website. Vaya con dios.

A: Ah, that would be Waiting List Points. For each year you apply to a magnet school and don’t get in, your child receives an additional 4 points. The maximum number of Waiting List Points is 12 (an accrual of three years). Wanting to keep options open for middle school (GRADE 6), some parents start applying to magnet schools in GRADE 3 (picking schools they’re unlikely to get into--i.e. schools with many more applications than openings, as indicated in the 12-page CHOICES brochure). Deep breathing, my friend.
