A press release reposted several times on Facebook has certainly sparked my interest: Granada Hills Charter High School has acquired the six-acre campus of Pinecrest School in Northridge. GHCHS has assured the school its current lease through 2014-15, but after that, it’s hard not to get too excited about the possibilities. Will Granada continue […]

Biggest Day Ever at “Ask a Magnet Yenta”
Our sister site, “Ask a Magnet Yenta” had its heaviest traffic yesterday and today, surpassing our previous numbers by several hundred views. With magnet acceptance letters posted and mailed out, and SAS season in full swing, we shouldn’t be surprised. Indeed we’re grateful. Helping parents find the best schools and stay informed on LAUSD […]

Affiliated Charters Face Growing Pains on Several Fronts
Families at affiliated charters have been getting bad news left and right this week. Affiliated charters, or charter light, or hybrid charters, or any of a variety of ways used to explain the program, are semi-autonomous schools that receive their funding from the state, and yet are still for all intents and purposes tied to […]

Interdistrict Permit Applications Available
Families interested in obtaining an Interdistrict Permit to attend school outside the LAUSD boundaries should know the permit website is live. Applications are available from 3/1 to 4/30. In recent years, LAUSD has tightened its restrictions on families wishing to attend schools outside the district, claiming the loss of funds as a reason.

The LAUSD school board will be considering a plan to allow students to choose their schools, rather than be zoned for specific campuses by address, according to the Daily News. Families would apply to the school of their choice. Obviously the details have to be worked out, but the implications are tremendous.
The […]

Making Schools Autonomous…and Responsible
LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and UTLA have reached a tentative agreement to bring decision making to the school sites.
Replacing the Public School Choice resolution that put schools out to bid, teachers within a school will have three years to turn a school around.
If a school wants to change their schedule, […]

Magnet Season in Full Swing
So today is November 3rd. We’ve now been on two tours, which ironically weren’t even really for magnet schools, and last night we attended the Middle School Magnet Night at Sepulveda. Thanks to previous commitments, my daughter and I arrived 10 minutes late and circumnavigated several blocks in North Hills before parking on Sepulveda, completely […]

Magnet Season to Begin Online
LAUSD has added a twist to magnet season: the brochures are going online. Starting on November 1st, families will be able to look up various programs, apply online, receive confirmation, change their minds, and reapply to different programs until the December 16th deadline.
Which is great news. But speaking as a parent of […]

Start of Something Beautiful in San Fernando at VRHS#5
Yesterday morning, I spent a couple of hours at Valley Region High School #5 in San Fernando. Along with several news trucks, district officials, city officials, and nonprofit groups, 1600 kids started their school year at the brand new school. Sadly, several breaking news stories preempted coverage of what might be the biggest move in […]

It’s September 1st. LAUSD starts its remaining schools next Wednesday, and my daughter will be starting her fifth grade year. At roughly the same time, I will start hyperventilating because we will have to start the school choice game all over again.
On one hand, we shouldn’t worry–she is truly the luckiest child alive. She […]
