It’s summer, and my daughter has compiled the list of places she wants to go, the kids she wants to play with, and the things she wants to do around the house. Some of the things are already a given–we will go downtown and take the train to get there (we already have). Today it […]

There are things that LAUSD does that drives the parents of gifted students absolutely crazy. Most parents have their first “shaking my head” moment when it comes to testing to identify gifted students. It’s virtually impossible to use outside testing. Which makes sense, since the person being paid has a reason to identify someone […]

When I first read the headline, LAUSD Amends Homework Policy, I was excited. For years, at the school site and throughout the district, I’ve fought the tendency to overwork students for the sake that “they might go to Harvard or Yale some day.” Unfortunately the new policy has little to do with increasing quality […]

Maybe this was an off year, or maybe I’m just hearing about it more, but it sure seems like a lot of families were accepted with fewer points than expected on “off” years.
Certainly, families who apply to a magnet in the opening year are subject to getting in–that’s really the whole point. Families apply, […]

As the school year came to an end, a video went viral from a fairly new middle school in North Hollywood called Roy Romer Middle School. Unfortunately, it lacks celebrity parents so they didn’t get the attention that Millikan received when Luke Perry protested teacher cuts. And the cuts at Roy Romer Middle […]

Today is the last day of school for the remaining LAUSD campuses on a traditional calendar. Some high schools will graduate tonight. Kindergarteners will culminate this morning. Eighth graders will too.
And thinking of middle school, I try to ignore the gnawing dread. Today begins my one-year anxiety attack to find a middle school […]

The theme for today is “Does the punishment fit the crime?” In the first case, the clear answer is no, since no one has been apprehended, and the school doesn’t sound too interested in looking for the students responsible. LACES seniors poured manure throughout the hallways, leaving a $2,000 cleanup bill. Apparently things have […]

I’m hearing mixed messages from LAUSD. In the last week, I’ve mentioned articles highlighting the $20 million parent center project on 300 campuses, and in another article the district’s desire to minimize the impact of “professional parents” during public comment and other district meetings. Now comes word that LAUSD will be reducing ELAC/CEAC/Council of Council […]

I had a dilemma on Monday. Either attend a magnet meeting with John Deasy, or sit in on the interviews for one of the academies at the new high school in San Fernando. I had a gut feeling about how the magnet meeting would go based on years of experience with LAUSD, so I […]

LAUSD is celebrating the graduation of eight students with perfect attendance. Not perfect for this year, mind you, perfect for all thirteen years. It’s amazing to think that nothing kept them from school for 13 years. More parents should encourage great attendance given that’s how schools get funded. It’ll never make sense to send […]
