Making Schools Autonomous…and Responsible
LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and UTLA have reached a tentative agreement to bring decision making to the school sites.
Replacing the Public School Choice resolution that put schools out to bid, teachers within a school will have three years to turn a school around.
If a school wants to change their schedule, […]

Every family in LAUSD will soon be receiving a $15 gift card to be applied to teacher-requested projects on the Donors Choose website.
Originally, I had concerns about viral PR campaigns for certain projects, but each project is limited to 50 donors. Some teachers already use Donors Choose to help fund classroom projects, […]

Magnet Season in Full Swing
So today is November 3rd. We’ve now been on two tours, which ironically weren’t even really for magnet schools, and last night we attended the Middle School Magnet Night at Sepulveda. Thanks to previous commitments, my daughter and I arrived 10 minutes late and circumnavigated several blocks in North Hills before parking on Sepulveda, completely […]

Magnet Season to Begin Online
LAUSD has added a twist to magnet season: the brochures are going online. Starting on November 1st, families will be able to look up various programs, apply online, receive confirmation, change their minds, and reapply to different programs until the December 16th deadline.
Which is great news. But speaking as a parent of […]

LAUSD is looking to institute a social media policy. Perhaps they’re realizing that blocking students from Facebook and Twitter essentially blocked no kid beyond elementary school thanks to sites that got around every block–not to mention that so many kids have smartphones it’s useless. According to the Daily News article, principals tweet all day […]

The on-again, off-again early start calendar is on yet again. In just one day, the media outlets were posting that John Deasy had requested an indefinite hold to the calendar, which starts three weeks earlier in mid-August, due to financial concerns.
Some of us celebrated, cautiously. While the Valley is the originator of the plan, […]

Start of Something Beautiful in San Fernando at VRHS#5
Yesterday morning, I spent a couple of hours at Valley Region High School #5 in San Fernando. Along with several news trucks, district officials, city officials, and nonprofit groups, 1600 kids started their school year at the brand new school. Sadly, several breaking news stories preempted coverage of what might be the biggest move in […]

It’s September 1st. LAUSD starts its remaining schools next Wednesday, and my daughter will be starting her fifth grade year. At roughly the same time, I will start hyperventilating because we will have to start the school choice game all over again.
On one hand, we shouldn’t worry–she is truly the luckiest child alive. She […]

Today, the LA Times is featuring an article on the changes coming to the LAUSD menu.
The district faces difficulties on several fronts. Many schools do not have actual cooking facilities, and only heat the food trucked in the night before. Lunch staffs have been cut or demoted, since they’re heating and serving […]

Tomorrow morning, students in the majority of the Local District 1 high schools will return to school. Their siblings in middle school and elementary, as well as the vast majority of high schools in the rest of LAUSD won’t start until September 7th.
These are the weeks I cherish. Other parts of the […]
